State Auditor Arrests Former Bookkeeper at Warren County Tax Collector’s Office

JACKSON, Miss. – Today State Auditor Shad White announced Special Agents from his office, along with officers from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, arrested former Warren County Tax Collector’s office bookkeeper Paula Hunt. Hunt was arrested for embezzlement by a public official after she was indicted by a grand jury assembled by District Attorney for the 9th District Richard Smith, Jr. Hunt also received a demand letter for $165,329.98 at the time of her arrest. All interest and investigative costs are included in the demand amount.

As bookkeeper, Hunt was responsible for handling cash and checks received by the Warren County Tax Collector and making daily bank deposits for the office. She also had the ability to transfer funds between the tax collector’s office bank accounts. Hunt is accused of stealing cash from payments received by the office from November 2017 to August 2018. To conceal the missing cash, Hunt allegedly transferred money between office bank accounts. The embezzlement scheme was discovered and reported to the Auditor’s office when a bank account from the tax collector’s office was overdrawn.

“Paula Hunt had too much control over the money that flowed through her office, and that control gave her the opportunity to embezzle a large amount of taxpayers’ money,” said Auditor White. “Public officials around the state need to be aware of this example and need to review their own offices to see who might have the opportunity to steal in the same way Hunt did.”

“It doesn’t matter how much you might personally trust your employees,” said White. “Be sure no one person has too much control over cash.”

A $50,000 surety bond covered Hunt’s employment at the Warren County Tax Collector’s office. A surety bond is similar to insurance for taxpayers and helps ensure money stolen or misspent by a public official is recovered. Hunt will remain personally liable for the entire amount of the demand.

If convicted, Hunt faces up to 20 years in prison or $5,000 in fines. All persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case will be prosecuted by the office of District Attorney Smith.

The Auditor’s office has issued demands worth over $4.1 million on behalf of Mississippi taxpayers since July 2018. The public can help the Auditor’s office protect public money by reporting embezzlement of public funds online any time by clicking the red button at www.osa.ms.gov or via telephone during normal business hours at 1-(800)-321-1275.

(JACKSON, MISS.) — Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer travel season for many people. According to AAA, more than 43 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, up nearly four percent from last year. With more vehicles on the road, it is important to be patient and drive smart.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 94 percent of crashes are caused by human error. One of the most important safety steps drivers can take is simply slowing down and paying attention.

In 2017, there were 690 traffic fatalities in Mississippi. Speed was a factor in nine percent of traffic fatalities, and alcohol was a factor in 21 percent. Distraction was cited in over half of all fatal crashes involving teens. Half of the people killed in crashes last year were not wearing their seat belt.

To ensure everyone arrives safely at their destinations, motorist should:

  • Obey all speed limits and signs, especially through work zones.
  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • Never get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Avoid distracted driving. Put down cell phones while driving.

MDOT offers free resources to help the traveling public know about current road conditions. MDOTtraffic.com and the MDOT traffic mobile app help travelers plan their next road trip. The resources share constant updates on Mississippi roadways and also show the locations of rest areas and welcome centers throughout the state.

McNair to be Given Key to Town

On Saturday June 1st downtown Mount Olive will be filled with the sounds of music … guitars and dobros and singing and football.
 Whaaattttt????      Football????
Yes … football is really similar to music … both demand talent, timing, coordination and a strong-leader presence in a conductor.
And Mount Olive can claim her native son as the Master Football Conductor!    Of course, we are talking about FRED MCNAIR!
Fred was born and raised in Mount Olive by his mother Lucille McNair.    He played quarterback on the Mount Olive Pirate football team and graduated from Mount Olive  High School in 1986.
McNair began his college football career as a wide receiver at Alcorn State University in 1986 before moving to quarterback his junior season then finishing fifth in Division 1-AA in passing efficiency his senior year and being named to the All-SWAC second team in 1989. He received his bachelors degree in 1992 and furthered his education with a masters degree  in 1996 from Alcorn State University.
McNair coached at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi for four years. During his tenure at Millsaps, they won two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships
Prior to McNair’s return to Alcorn State, he was coach and athletic director at Collins High for one season.  That was after winning state championships in each of his two seasons as offensive coordinator at his alma mater Mount Olive High.
McNair was named Alcorn State University 21st head football coach on February 2, 2016. He previously worked at Alcorn as the quarterbacks coach for three seasons.
In three seasons, Fred McNair has coached the Braves to three SWAC East Division titles and the 2018 SWAC Championship. McNair brought his team to the 2018 Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl after earning SWAC Coach of the Year honors.
During the summer months, Fred works as a football camp director for Mercedes Lewis in Long Beach, California; Jerrius Norwood in Brandon, Mississippi; Brett Favre and Adailus Thomas, both in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He is also a Dixie Youth baseball coach and commissioner in Covington County as well as a youth football coach.
As if that is not enough, coach McNair is also a motivational speaker at churches, schools, and social events throughout Mississippi. He is definitely a man on the move with a vision seeking anyone that he can help.
Football is many things:  a showcase of athletic prowess, a hard-hitting game of strategy and struggle, a sport with stories of perseverence, determination, and triumph on and off the field.  This is the story about Fred McNair’s journey.  The world will continue to be his stage as he orchestrates both the music of football and the music of life.
On June 1st at 10:15 am the Town of Mount Olive will proudly present a “Key to the City” to Fred McNair on the Music Off Main stage in downtown Mount Olive.    He may not sing or play an instrument that day but he will certainly wow the crowd  and make each and every one there beam with pride!

Birds in the Church

Listen today on how the Holy Spirit is speaking to you. Our scripture text today comes from ISAISH 40:31 but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not faint.
If we wait and really get in contact with God our strength shall be renewed! We will be free like the birds and soar above our problems! We can be excited about what ever God is doing for us and what he is going to do for us!
If we hold out to the end God has promised us a home in heaven! This home is ours just for asking! The way we ask is repent. Repentance is done on our faith we have in Jesus. Our eyes must be kept on the Cross of Calvary and our feet on Holy Ground! In our house of worship have there are different kinds of birds. A few of them will be listed today.
  1. Chicken – This person runs around and sees how much mischief they can get into.
  2. Ostrich – They bury their heads every time they are ask to do something in worshiping God.
  3. Peacock – They are proud in serving God but for the wrong reason. All the attention must be them. They are stuck on themselves.
  4. Buzzard – They are always late and miss out on the blessings of God. They set and watch the service then decide to get involved. They choice to take what is left the service.
  5. Coo Coo Bird – They pen up in the church service and let God have his way with them. They are truly in love with God and want to serve him any way they can.
  6. Dove – They are always wanting to keep peace with everyone. They let the Holy Spirit lead, guide, and protect them always! They are prayer warriors! They are the one ones who truly seek God about everything. Their motto is here I am God use me like never before!
  7. Eagle – They with the help of God soar above their problems no matter how big, small, deep or tall! God is their pilot all the time! They are proudly serving God but for the right reasons!
Are you truly wanting to fly away with Jesus? Your life can be renewed today by saying yes to Jesus! A closer walk can be yours! Let today be your victorious week! See you at the house!

MS Hospital Association Announces Proposal to Help Cover Uninsured

Hospital Assn. Wants to Pay Part of Medicaid Expansion Costs

Mississippi Hospital Association issued the following press release:

Mississippi hospitals have announced a proposal, Mississippi Cares, to help cover the almost 300,000 Mississippi adults in our state who have no health insurance and are not currently eligible for Medicaid. The proposed plan would be a public-private partnership between the State of Mississippi, Mississippi hospitals, Mississippi True, and its plan members to create a healthier and more productive Mississippi, to sustain access to hospital care for Mississippi communities, to reform the Medicaid payment and delivery models, and to stimulate Mississippi’s economy.

Mississippi Cares would cover non-disabled adults age 19-64 earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level (currently approximately $17,000 for an individual or $35,000 for a family of four). Due to the foresight of Republicans passing the Restore Hope Act in 2017, Mississippi already has a process in place to ensure compliance with these income standards. This proposal emphasizes personal responsibility and healthcare consumerism. Plan participants would contribute $20/month in premium payments, with a $100 co-pay for non-emergency use of a hospital emergency department if there is a federally qualified health center, rural health clinic, or urgent care center within 20 miles of the hospital. Other co-pays and plan benefits will mirror traditional fee-for-service Medicaid, with the exception of non-emergency transportation services. Dental and vision benefits will also be included. Non-employed plan members must enroll in a job training, education, or volunteer program, with certain exceptions.

“Uncompensated care costs in Mississippi are exceeding $600 million annually. Mississippi is among the highest in the country in medical debt. Not because our costs are too high – we rank in the bottom third in the country for health care expenditures per person – but because our need for healthcare is so great and our means to pay for that needed care is so low,” said Timothy H. Moore, President/Chief Executive Officer of the Mississippi Hospital Association, the state’s trade association for hospitals. “Healthcare is a quality of life issue. Many working adults have no health insurance coverage in our state. If Mississippi is going to improve the quality of life for our citizens, we can’t continue to do the same thing the same way and expect a different result. Plain and simple, what we’re doing, particularly in our Medicaid program, isn’t working. We need Medicaid reform.”

Under a special Medicaid waiver request, Mississippi hospitals would make an additional investment in the premiums needed to fund insurance coverage through a hospital-owned provider-sponsored health plan, Mississippi True. Due to hospital and participant investment, this plan will not cost the state any additional dollars. Hospital investments and personal premiums from plan members would fund the needed 10% state share to match the 90% federal share.

In 2015, the Mississippi legislature overwhelmingly passed Senate Bill 2441 to create Mississippi True with overwhelming Republican support. The bill recognized that provider-sponsored health plans are a vehicle for improving the delivery of Medicaid in our state, currently monopolized by out-of-state, for-profit companies. Mississippi True has already obtained a license from the Mississippi Department of Insurance. Well-established provider-led plans have demonstrated that they can improve health outcomes and spend less on their own administrative costs.

This plan will pump more than $1 billion dollars each year into Mississippi’s economy, create 19,000 jobs, improve personal income by over $600 million, and increase general fund revenue by $50-100 million. This proposal is a win-win situation for the state of Mississippi. It reduces uncompensated care costs for hospitals, helps Mississippians access the healthcare they need when they need it, and sustains access to hospital care, particularly in our rural communities. Most importantly, this proposal will result in a healthier and more productive workforce in our state.

For more information about the proposal, please visit www.MississippiCares.com.

God knocked me down and had a very good reason for doing it

By Joshua Rogers

A few years ago, I was on the verge of my dream job, one I had been working towards for years. Other than a few logistics to settle before I officially signed on the dotted line, it was finally mine– almost. In a last-minute surprise, a shift in funding at the company eliminated the position. I was devastated.

I felt disappointed with God. All of the signs had pointed to this job being His will. It felt like He had done a bait-and-switch.

I knew I was supposed to say that God was good and I just needed to accept the fact that He had a different plan. I didn’t want that plan though if I was really honest. There were too many good reasons for Him to do it the way I wanted. But I had to let go of it, and from my perspective, it was for no good reason.

Around that time, I ran across this quote from Eugene Peterson’s book “Run with the Horses,” in which he tells a story of seeing an adult swallow teaching its chicks to fly:

One adult swallow got alongside the chicks and started shoving them out toward the end of the branch – pushing, pushing, pushing.  The end one fell off.  Somewhere between the branch and the water four feet below, the wings started working, and the fledgling was off on his own.  Then the second one.

The third was not to be bullied.  At the last possible moment his grip on the branch loosened just enough so that he swung downward, then tightened again, bulldog tenacious.  The parent was without sentiment.  He pecked at the desperately clinging talons until it was more painful for the poor chick to hang on than risk the insecurities of flying.  The grip was released, and the inexperienced wings began pumping. The mature swallow knew what the chick did not–that it would fly– that there was no danger in making it do what it was perfectly designed to do.

That story hit me hard as I realized that I was that third little bird, the one whose talons were locked onto the comfortable branch of having my dream job. God wasn’t going to have it though. God was going to peck, peck, peck at my talons and do whatever it took to set me free from my desperate attempt to hold onto something that was supposed to make my life complete–something other than Him.

Several years later, I look back at that frustrating time and notice something: Letting go of that branch taught me how to fly in ways I never would have otherwise. I didn’t say it made me good at flying  –  the storms of life still fling this little bird around. It feels unfair and hard. I seek the comfort of new branches, and the Lord actually allows me to rest on them for a while. But before long, He’s nudging me again.

Year by year, with each plunge of faith, my little wings are getting stronger. I’m learning to trust the one who made those wings and believe that, in the end, He’ll use them to get me just where He wants me to be.

U.S. Measles Cases Continue to Climb

.U.S. measles cases are continuing their record climb, with more than 100 new cases added in the last few weeks. The total of new cases nationwide for 2019 reached 880 as of May 17, with two new states affected since the beginning of the month. Outbreaks of three or more confirmed cases are now active in New York, Michigan, California, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington.

As for many years, Mississippi has no reported cases of measles for 2019. Mississippi’s strong vaccination requirements for school entry have given it one of the highest rates of vaccination coverage against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

AG Hood Asks Corps of Engineers for More Info on Flood Management

Letter warns of deadly environmental impact, seeks information on pumps

JACKSON—Attorney General Jim Hood sent the attached letter Tuesday to the Major General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, stating his concerns regarding both the river flooding in the Mississippi Delta and the environmental impact of the Corps’ recent decision to re-open the Bonnet Carré Spillway.

The letter requests a meeting with General Kaiser and staff as soon as possible to better understand the situation and the Corps’ plans to protect Mississippians and our state’s natural resources in both the Coastal and Delta regions.

The letter also requested that the attorney general be included in all future stakeholder meetings regarding the opening of the BCS and Mississippi flood management.

“I reached out to the Corps of Engineers to better understand flood management and make sure the best approaches are implemented in protecting our communities from flooding and limiting serious environmental impacts,” General Hood said. “The opening of the Bonnett Carre’ Spillway on the Mississippi River by the Corps of Engineers has allowed freshwater and pollutants to flow through Lake Pontchartrain into the Mississippi Sound, killing dolphins and sea turtles and adversely impacting the seafood industry. Mississippi has one of the largest dolphin populations in the United States, and we have had increased dolphin deaths due to the freshwater displacing the salt content of the Sound. There have been 80 dolphin and 125 sea turtle deaths this year, and the month of April saw the highest number of these deaths in the past six years. I understand that the Corps is concerned about potential flooding in the New Orleans area. Meanwhile, our Delta farmers may not be able to plant a crop this summer, which will be devastating to Delta communities on top of extensive damage to homes. I want to make sure that the Corps is considering all of its options in flood management. Moreover, I want the federal government to know that the state of Mississippi intends to have it losses compensated or mitigated.”

Enjoying Memorial Day!

What a beautiful weekend for the Memorial Day holidays!  One thing is for sure, we had sunshine!

I make a punch recipe that is enjoyed by all ages.  The punch is perfect for summer time activities.

Pineapple Lemonade is based on Countrytime

lemonade mix!

Pineapple Lemonade

1 cup Countrytime Lemonade Mix

3 cups Cold water

1 can of chilled pineapple juice (46 0z)

2 cans of Sprite

Mix of fruit:  peaches, pineapple, strawberries, cherries etc

Mix everything together and freeze.  Serve slushy!

The Pineapple Lemonade is a great adult beverage.  Substitute  rum for water.

I make an ice ring of every kind of fruit I have using part of the punch juice for the ring.  The ring keeps the punch cool through out the day and the dissolved  fruits are delicious!

The punch is a hit at any summer party I host.  My friend Robin Naquin gave me this awesome drink.

Another recipe I made this weekend, a stand-by I use often and everyone loves, is Peach Cobbler

Peach Cobbler

1 stick butter

3/4 cup self-rising flour

Dash of salt

2 cups sugar

2 cups sliced peaches (fresh or canned drained)

3/4 cup milk

(Sometimes I add cherries that have been drained)

Mix peaches with 1 cup of the sugar.  Melt butter in the 9 X 13 baking dish you will use to bake your cobbler.  Blend remains cup of sugar, flour, salt, and milk.  Pour over the melted butter.  Do not sire!  Put peaches on top.  Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees or until crust is golden brown.  The batter will rise during baking.

Ya’ll know I am not a cook…so I don’t know what got me on this kick!  Hope you enjoy!

When will we understand that God’s plan for our lives is higher and better than any plan we can possibly imagine?

When will we learn to wholly trust Him?

When will we realize just how much He loves us?

When you look back over your life, how many times did you consider a closed door to be the work of Satan, only to discover it was really the hand of God protecting you or keeping you from making a terrible mistake?

Trust Him. Wait on Him. He is at work in your life!
