Caughman Seeks Re-Election

To the residents of Senate District 35 it has been my honor to serve you as your State Senator these last four years. I now seek your support once again as I run for re-election of this great district. Four years ago I told you I would fight for the hard working tax payers of our state. I told you I would work to limit government involvement in the private sector. I said I would help push legislation to protect life at every stage. I would support education at all levels and that would work to increase parental choice for those with special needs. These are the principles I ran on four years ago and I am proud to say my voting record reflects that I have done just that.

I believe our state is headed in the right direction as we have cut taxes in our state and we have over $400 million in the rainy day fund. I believe we should continue to find ways to get more of that money back in the pocket of the tax payers. I am proud to have supported legislation that gives more sales tax monies back to local governments as well. I co-sponsored a bill for several years that finally passed in our special session that would gradually grow the local portion of the amount of sales taxes collected from 18 ½% to 21%. Our state has also become the most prolife states in the nation and I am proud to have co-sponsored the “Heartbeat” legislation this year that would abolish abortion once a heartbeat is heard. It is very important to me to be a voice for those babies in the womb that have no voice. I am proud to have supported legislation that will send much needed help back to our counties to help in road and bridge repair. We should always work with local and county officials in finding ways to find common ground and do what is good for the people of our district and state. As a former teacher I know the demanding job our teachers face. I understand the challenges and I know how demanding it is in the classroom now more than ever. I believe we should shrink our districts within the state and get more of that money into our classrooms and with our teachers.

It has been an honor to serve you as your State Senator and once again I ask for your consideration. If I cannot be contacted at the capital I am most of the time at full time job at Peoples Bank in Mendenhall. Please do not hesitate to call on me if I can ever be of assistance to you!

Thank You City!

Thank you to the City of Magee, my alderman Matthew Hickman, and Joe Worrell for working tirelessly in achieving the victory of the “eye sore” trailer located behind my house on 4th Avenue (near the railroad tracks) being dismantled!  I have worried Matthew and Joe to death about the situation

It is hard for me to be patient…because I have been fussing for about 2 years…but finally progress has been made.

I know our city folks are trying to clean up our city.  I’m just happy when I see something accomplished.

Now, Joe and Matthew, don’t get too comfortable…I’m coming back on ya’ll for another situation in our ward!

MDOC Seeking Employees

MDOC is conducting interviews for correctional officers at the three state prisons through Saturday

JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Corrections is conducting interviews for correctional officers through Saturday at each of the three state prisons.

Interview and screening days usually are twice per month, but the MDOC is being more flexible with recruitment to accommodate potential applicants’ schedules, especially those of graduating college students.

The hours are from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., except Saturday when screening ends at 10 a.m., at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF), Mississippi State Penitentiary (MSP) and South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI).

The agency is aggressively recruiting to address staffing shortages mainly in security.

“Coming to work for the Mississippi Department of Corrections is an investment in a career,” Commissioner Pelicia E. Hall said. “The wages for a correctional officer are not as attractive as we would like them to be, but we will continue to work with the Legislature. You may start out in an entry-level position at the MDOC, but you can become one of its leaders.”

The department is filled with examples of once entry-level employees now in command. They include Deputy Commissioners Jerry Williams, SMCI Superintendent Joe Errington and CMCF Chief of Security Dean Epps, just to name a few.

“I wanted a career,” said Epps, now second in command at CMCF. “That is why I joined and stayed with the MDOC.”

Epps understands concerns about the dangers of the job, she said, but “we offer training at every level to make us think safety at all times. If you take advantage of the training, you will always be mindful of doing your job correctly.”

When her daughter became ill and needed her attention for two weeks, she had enough time to take off without fear of losing her job, Epps said. She became interested in corrections after hearing from her brother, then an employee at the MDOC, about the benefits the department was offering.

She also has had the opportunity to further her education as she moved from a correctional officer to a case manager to an academic teacher to a warden and now her current position.

After more than 20 years with the MDOC, Epps, who is unrelated to the former corrections commissioner, is happy with her career choice.

“The Mississippi Department of Corrections is packed with lifelong professional and personal growth opportunities,” Epps said.

In addition to the benefits Epps mentioned, the MDOC also is offering a 5 percent increase in starting pay, if you have a college degree or experience in the workforce.
