Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
– Isaiah 40:28-31

Have you noticed anything different with the First Baptist Church Magee’s sign?   The 44 year old sign had a makeover.  The brick sign at the corner of 1st Street NW and Simpson Hwy 149 has been updated with new lettering and new lights!!  Drive by and take a look… the sign looks great.  Remember to drive by at night and see it lit up!!

The sign was erected in 1974.  Joe W. McPhail and wife, Diane donated the money for the sign in memory of Mrs. Bessie Ann Green.  Diane states that Joe saved the money he earned as a Magee Alderman and paid for the sign.

Joe chose Mrs. Green because she was their neighbor and became like a sister to him and Diane.  According to Diane, Mrs. Green was the first cancer patient her family became very close to knowing and love.  The  McPhail’s youngest daughter of three, Angel Ann, was named after their dear friend, Mrs. Bessie Ann.

First Baptist Church Magee will be hosting “Mondays with The Master”  each Monday night during the month of August beginning at 7pm.

Monday, August  6th…Jim Futral & Slater Murphy

Gulfport, Miss. – Terry Lee Reddix, 43, of Vancleave, Mississippi, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola, Jr. to 360 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine in Vancleave, announced U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Special Agent in Charge Christopher Freeze with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

On May 23, 2016, Terry Lee Reddix sold methamphetamine to a confidential source from his home on the “Hill” in Van Cleave, Mississippi. Reddix had been distributing methamphetamine from that locale for several years and law enforcement was able to make several purchases of methamphetamine from him. His sentence was reflective of his prior criminal history and the extensive organization he ran from the Hill.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Meynardie.

Mississippi State to shelter chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, nation’s most prestigious honor society

STARKVILLE, Miss.—The Phi Beta Kappa Society has awarded a chapter of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society to Mississippi State University after a rigorous, multi-year review. Only 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities shelter PBK chapters.

“The granting of a Phi Beta Kappa chapter to Mississippi State is a testament to the outstanding faculty and administrators who have been working toward this most significant achievement,” said MSU President Mark E. Keenum.
Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is reserved for the best and brightest undergraduates majoring in the arts and sciences. They are chosen through a highly selective and merit-based invitation process.

The vote to grant Mississippi State a chapter came on Friday [Aug. 3] during proceedings of PBK’s 45th Triennial Council in Boston.

“It has been a 40-year journey for us to reach this milestone,” Keenum said.

The university’s first application was submitted in 1979 by Morris “Bill” Collins, the founding director of the Stennis Institute of Government. Nancy Hargrove, now a Giles Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, led the 1982 submission. Leslie Bauman, now professor emerita in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, led application initiatives in 1985, 1988, 2000 and 2003.

Since 2007, the application effort has been led by Robert West, a professor in the Department of English who was inducted into the honor society as an undergraduate at Wake Forest University.
Of note, a charter is granted to PBK members of the faculty, not the university itself. For the chapter to be maintained, members should comprise at least 10 percent of the full-time arts and sciences teaching faculty.

“Dr. West and his fellow Phi Beta Kappa colleagues among our faculty have worked tirelessly to organize a chapter, and I appreciate deeply their hard work and dedication on behalf of our students,” Keenum said.
Keenum noted that for decades Mississippi State’s top students have competed successfully for distinguished scholarships and fellowships, and said, “I would put our students’ performance up against any other university because the results speak for themselves.”
Recent examples from the past few years include Rhodes Scholar Field Brown of Vicksburg and two additional Rhodes finalists; Gates Cambridge Scholar Lucas Ferguson of Batesville; four Goldwater Scholars, including 2018 winner Nic Ezzell of Laurel, and five Goldwater honorable mentions; Boren Scholar Donielle Allen of McCalla, Alabama, and two Truman Scholars — Jamie Aron and Natalie Jones, both of Flowood; and several Fulbright recipients.

“It is most appropriate that our exceptional students will now be eligible for consideration of Phi Beta Kappa membership, and we look forward to the induction of our inaugural class of scholars in the spring of 2019,” Keenum said.
Provost and Executive Vice President Judy Bonner joined Keenum and West in Boston for the Triennial Council, along with Rick Travis, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Christopher Snyder, dean of the Shackouls Honors College; and Molly Zuckerman, an associate professor of anthropology and PBK faculty representative.

Founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, PBK members include 17 U.S. presidents, 40 justices of the U.S. Supreme Court and more than 140 winners of the Nobel Prize. Learn more about The Phi Beta Kappa Society at www.pbk.org.
Additionally, Mississippi State is creating a $1 million endowment to support the university’s new PBK chapter. For additional information about the Phi Beta Kappa Endowment, please contact Vice President for Development and Alumni John Rush at 662-325-9306 or john.rush@msstate.edu.

Billy Morehead received national acclaim for his diligence to encourage college accounting students to pursue public service careers.
In late July, leaders of the Association of Government Accountants recognized Morehead for his outstanding service as the inaugural chair of its Higher Education Committee.

The Mississippi College accounting professor earned the AGA National President’s Award.

“It was an honor and privilege to chair the AGA’s National Higher Education Committee during its inaugural year,” Morehead said. “I look forward to year two.”

The Mississippian thanked AGA President Jim Arnette for the honor. The MC professor saluted the association’s entire committee and its national staff team.
Founded in 1950 as an association of federal accountants, the group expanded in 1975 to include state and local government finance professionals. The organization is based in Alexandria, Virginia. Morehead served as the organization’s 60th president in 2009-2010.
The Greenville native joined the MC School of Business faculty in August 2011 as an associate professor of accountancy. His duties on the Clinton campus followed an award-winning career at Delta State University and in state government. The Delta State graduate served as vice president for finance and administration at his alma mater in Cleveland.

Moorhead first joined the professional association at its Jackson, Mississippi chapter in 1986.

As first chair of the AGA Higher Education Committee, Morehead also shared with college students the benefits of joining a professional organization.
The MC educator has served as a former financial facilitator and compliance auditor with the International Mission Board.
Mississippi College colleagues and friends across the nation offered their congratulations to Morehead for getting his latest award.
In 2012, Morehead picked up the association’s Robert W. King Memorial Award named for the AGA’s founding president.

Billy and his wife, Audrey Morehead, are Madison residents.

Gulfport, Miss. – Jack Benny Hales, 30, of Laurel, was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden, Jr. to 157 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, announced U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Jere T. Miles, Special Agent in Charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Homeland Security Investigations in New Orleans. Hales was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

On January 23, 2018, Hales delivered over 50 grams of 94% pure methamphetamine to a cooperating source in Gulfport, Mississippi. While arresting Hales, agents found the methamphetamine in a bag in his car.

Charlie Spillers Releases New Book

Author Charlie Spillers has released his latest book, “Whirlwind-A Frank Marsh Novel.”

Charlie is a 1963 graduate of Magee High School. He spent three years in the the U. S. Marine Corps before embarking on a 42 year career in law enforcement. He graduated from the University of Mississippi with a business degree in 1981 and Ole Miss Law School in 1986. After 10 years of undercover work, Charlie served as a regional commander for the MBN and later spent 23 years as a federal prosecutor.

Charlie resides in Oxford with his wife Evelyn where he serves as an instructor in continuing legal education courses.

With all that said, Charlie is one smart guy who is now recognized as an accomplished author.

I interviewed Charlie when he released his first book, “Confessions of an Undercover Agent.” Patrice and I went to the ETV station in Jackson for the interview which was my first time to officially meet Charlie. I was enthralled with Charlie’s story. Of course, one of the first things I asked him was how did his wife handle an undercover life!

Charlie already has the 3rd Frank Marsh novel half-way complete. I asked Charlie who Frank Marsh was. He hesitated and replied, “ a combination of people he met along the way.” Personally, I think Frank Marsh is his alter-ego! But, again, that is just my opinion.

I have my copy of “Whirlwind” and plan to read the book soon. The reviews have been great on Amazon. Will give a “Sue review” in a few weeks.

You can purchase the book on Amazon.

Charlie is an interesting fellow with an extraordinary background. Reading the experience of his life in book form feels almost personal and invasive.

Charlie is in full-blown book tour mode. After leaving Magee Saturday, he and Evelyn were heading to the coast for speaking engagements in Ocean Springs. He is signing books everywhere he goes! Marketing a book isn’t easy. In my opinion, Charlie has found the secret. I’m just glad he realized MageeNews.com was the place to start!

A short description of what to look for in “Whirlwind.”
A drone strike in Syria unleashes a chain of volatile events in the U.S. and Europe that embroils Hezbollah and Iranian death squads, the FBI and the White House. FBI agent Frank Marsh and NSC staffer Kathy Foster are thrust into the middle of an international terror plot that puts their lives and the lives of thousands in imminent danger.
In retaliation for the drone strike, terror cells are sent to the U.S to launch attacks. When a terrorist dies in an auto accident, FBI agent Frank Marsh discovers that an attack in the U.S. may be imminent. Based on vague clues, he and Kathy Foster try to figure out where the terrorists plan to attack and they try to prevent it. At first, sparks fly between Frank and Kathy because of an issue from their past. The investigation is also hampered by bureaucratic obstacles, turf battles among national security agencies and treachery. They become outcasts from their own organizations and no one will listen when they discover the possible target of a terror attack.
Frank discovers that someone in Washington, D.C. is providing information to the terror group. In Tehran, Marwan, the commander of an Iranian assassination unit, realizes Frank and Kathy are a threat to uncovering the traitor and he targets the couple for assassination. Gripping intrigue propels Frank, Kathy and Marwan to a final confrontation.

Six New West Nile Virus Human Cases

JACKSON, Miss. – Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports six new human cases of West Nile virus (WNV), bringing the state’s total to 13 so far for 2018. The reported cases are in Adams, Forrest, Hinds (2), Marion, and Oktibbeha counties.
So far this year human cases have been reported in Adams, Copiah, Forrest, Hinds (6), Itawamba, Marion, Oktibbeha, and Pearl River counties. In 2017, Mississippi had 63 WNV cases and two deaths.

“We do know that mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus are active throughout the state, so just because a case has not yet been reported in your county of residence does not mean you shouldn’t take precautions against mosquitoes,” said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers. “Peak WNV season is July through September in Mississippi.”Byers added that while most people recover without any long-term problems, some develop a more severe infection that can lead to complications and even death – especially those over 50 years of age.

Symptoms of WNV infection are often mild and may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.

The MSDH suggests the following precautions to protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne illnesses:
• Use a mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient such as DEET while you are outdoors.
• Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
• Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
• Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.

For more information on mosquito-borne illnesses, visit the MSDH website at HealthyMS.com/westnile.
