The MFD celebrated a year …well really, a life time of hard work. Members of the department were recognized for years served, continuing education, attendance at fires and fire meetings.
The Fallen Fire Fighter Table Ceremony would move anyone to tears. Each item on the table represented something from the life of a fireman.
The meeting was a time of appreciation, reflection, and remembrances to those who serve and of those who have served. James and Janet Peden were recognized for their attendance. James is a former fireman who continues to support the men as well as attend the banquet.
A surprise award this year was “The Golden Heart.” Shane Steel explained the decision and reason for having this new award. Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie and Chief Lane Steel were awarded this honor. Shane explained that Charlie had shown such a loving heart and spirit in the death of Jacob Allan. Following the tragedy, Charlie stayed with the family.
I don’t think anyone would question the heart Lane has for the department. The hours spent in service to MFD are unbelievable.
The Pelahatchie Fire Chief, Carl VanHorn, was on hand to present plaques to the fireman who have obtained a Level 1 status.
The following members attended the Chevron Fire School: Tony Puckett, David Craft, Philip Magee, Paul Johnson, Shane Steele and John Valadie.
The Red Rover Award was presented to Tony Puckett who saved the life of a dog who was tangled in a fence with the fire almost to engulf the dog. Lane and the guys got a charge out of “honoring” Tony.
Tony Puckett was recognized as the Fire Inspector for the Magee Department.
The most prestigious award of the night is the naming of the “Firefighter of the Year.” The award is voted on by the fireman and is kept secret until banquet night. The winner of this year’s “Firefighter of the Year” was Charlie Valadie. Charlie was almost shocked speechless. His emotional acceptance speech brought tears to almost everyone in attendance.
